To Index Data Is to Sort Data

Most programmers rely on indexing because it makes it easier for them to try out something new. The challenge is that it won’t always bring in the results that you expect. Indexing is a good option and if you use it right, you can get some pretty impressive results.

The main idea of indexing data

The reason you’re indexing data is to find the records where the field value is equivalent to that given value. If the data set has a particular scale, then you can scan the record with various comparisons. The data can be sorted by the target field, and in that case you can rely on binary search via the creation of a binary tree. With the right approach and ideas you can make it work and adapting everything becomes a lot easier. 

Indexing helps you sort data, but you can’t sort the original data set. What you can do is to create a smaller data set, an index which is storying the key values of all the records and their positions. In case there are more fields specified for the key value searching, you can create an index. It’s possible to have multiple indexes for the original data set if possible. The thing to keep in mind here is that whenever the data set is sorted, space consumption can be very large, so that’s something you may want to consider here.

It’s also possible to use the B tree in order to manage the data update efficiently. This arrives as an extension of the binary tree into the n-ary tree that helps sort data via key values. You also have the hash index. This one is calculating the hash value for the recorded key values. Thee values are numbers that fall from 1 to k. These can be very useful to locate records within a binary field.

Singled field indexes

Single field indexes work great if you have a condition on key values. However, these indexes won’t work that well if that condition is a key value function. It will work if you have a general search condition which is separate by the condition and which puts other values at its outermost layer. 

Multi-field indexes

If you create indexes for all the fields involved in that search condition, it won’t bring you any major benefit. Only a single index over a field will work. You can create multi-field indexes over both fields. If the index table is getting bigger, you can expect the I/O costs to become higher as well.

Database data is usually stored according to the insertion order. When the order is in line with the index key values, the retrieved data will be stored continually and with amazing benefits. When this happens, the index based filtering has the potential to boost the performance. That will happen when the retrieved data amount is very high, so try to take that into consideration for the best experience.
